List of products by manufacturer Celestial Games

Celestial is a South African game development studio. Formed in 1994. We successfully published 2 PC titles and then took a little break. Recently re-opened we are excited to announce the HD version of our most successful title, Toxic Bunny.

Toxic Bunny has been revamped, remastered (as much as anyone could be his master) and re-caffeinated. Every line of code and every image has been rewritten and redrawn. The plot revamped, the delivery improved and generally a great deal of coffee consumed.

History

1994 - 1996

1994-1996

When we formed Celestial Games in 1994 we decided to make two games. Toxic Bunny and Arni the mental Armadillo. We quickly realized that two games was far too ambitious and focused on the better idea. For the next year and a half we worked part time. Scrounging weekends and evenings where we could progress with the game. We didn’t have a deadline just a goal. In fact at the time we were following the guidance of build it and they will come and in 1996 they did.

The ‘they’ in question were in fact Vision Software at the time. A local games distributor. In fact the largest at the time. They bought into the idea of Toxic Bunny and funded the last 6 months of development. Moving from part time to full time made a great difference. We drank most of their coffee, hid away in a dark room for 6 months and emerged thirsty, hungry and holding a CD triumphantly in our hands.

1996 - 1997

1996-1997

Toxic Bunny was released here in South Africa selling 7000 units. Sitting number one on the shelves for 6 weeks through December. We were ecstatic. During this time Vision Software was purchased by Electronic Arts and become a branch of EA. This opened a few international doors. We, with the help of EA, managed to publish the game in the UK, France, Holland and Poland.

Adding another 150,000 sales to the Toxic Bunny. We had to translate to French, Dutch and Polish. With Toxic Bunny making the rounds internationally we started thinking of what to do next. We started working on a title called The Tainted. We involved a few new people and got to work on our isometric Sci-Fi action RPG.

1997 - 2001

While we worked steadily on The Tainted some internal changes were happening within EA. Bullfrog was closed down and the Europe branch was no longer producing games all production was moved to the US. With this we had to leave working closely with EA locally and work alone. Funds were short and we had taken on something too big, production of The Tainted was marred with obstacles. We managed to finish much later then we had originally planned.

We sold The Tainted only in South Africa. Doing a few thousand units, We never managed to get an international deal for the game.
We struggled on for a year or so more looking for creative ways to fund ourselves and make games from South Africa. Some time in 2001 we closed shop. We realised that the time was not right for us and we had to call it a day .. For now.

2007 - 2010

2007-2010

Still not expecting much from the process a small project was started. One lazy night in Cameroon unexpected as it was. We started porting the Toxic Bunny code to Java. Out of idle curiosity combined with the really strong coffee sold there.

The Java port was at first a small port to see what was possible. Bit of fun and dabbling in Computer Games again. The port went fastand in just 3 nights we had a running prototype. This was tinkered with after hours from time to time, growing and growing. Adding more and more of the original game back. Reusing the original graphics.

We continued to work on the game. At some point we tried improving the graphics quality as we could see the potential for the game was not being met by the old graphics. Not really realising we had moved from tinkering into full production we started squeezing more out of the java engine. As we proceeded with the port we soon realized the potential and started exploring new graphics avenues.

2011 - 2012

Team

We allocated resources full time to try get the project completed with so much art and so many new features we wanted to pack into the game. Still self funded we moved enthusiastically but also carefully. Redrawing all the sprites and then drawing the levels as massive vistas's was our goal.

We didn't quite accurately estimate the size of that work and we had to delay the final release from 1 Quarter 2011  to 4th Quarter 2012. Toxic Bunny HD Launched here in South Africa October 5th 2012. Distributed by Apex. We are currently in the process of Porting Toxic Bunny HD to other platforms as well as negotiating our international publishing and distribution deals.
